OUTWARD AND INWARD DEVOTION

There are many things in this world we are devoted to:  our families, friends, jobs, our homes and Churches.  This outward devotion is an action seen by others and often what we are devoted to, takes much of our time.  Our devotion is seemless because our hearts are consumed with our priorities.  We are dedicated.

But does our outward devotion truly reflect our inward devotion?  Or are we showing others our outward devotion to impress?  I think we all need to examine our motives for what we are devoted to because GOD does see our hearts within, and sees if we have only HIM as our true priority.

EMBRACE HIS WORDS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE IN YOUR DAY.

HIS words and our obedience to them take root in us, in our inner being and become fruit later.  Hearing leads to understanding and wisdom, which leads to action on our part.  But can we just read HIS words and then never have fruit from them?  Does our inward devotion to HIM with reading, study and prayer take priority over everything else there is?  Let us ask ourselves this very question!

EZEKIEL 36:26  “I WILL GIVE YOU A NEW HEART AND PUT A NEW SPIRIT WITHIN YOU; I WILL REMOVE YOUR HEART OF STONE AND GIVE YOU A HEART OF FLESH.”

Do we believe deep in our hearts and then respond to JESUS and HIS Great Commission?  Or do we keep JESUS hidden from the world because we fear the world’s response?  I think we can have inner devotion and not show any outward devotion.  These are the so-called closet Christians.  I used to be one.  But no more and I am unafraid to say in mixed company if asked, what I believe in and WHO my devotion in my life is to.  This outward devotion is the freedom HE give us…….we don’t have to worry about the world’s response, because HE walks before us and after us.  If we are worried HIS words fall on deaf ears, well maybe they do, but we should trust that HIS words never return void!

ISAIAH 55: 11 “SO SHALL MY WORD BE THAT GOES OUT FROM MY MOUTH; IT SHALL NOT RETURN TO ME EMPTY, BUT IT SHALL ACCOMPLISH THAT WHICH I PURPOSE, AND SHALL SUCCEED IN THE THING FOR WHICH I SENT IT.”

What a wonderful thing to know that our inner devotion to HIS word, memorizing it and being able to speak in mixed company will accomplish what needs to be done for CHRIST!

Let’s remember that our outward devotion is dedicated for the LORD and no one else.  Doesn’t matter what any one else sees.  What matters is what GOD sees!  Our sincere worship of HIM is seen by HIM alone.  That is what matters…….what HE sees from us and in us.

BE BOLD IN THE FAITH.

Sometimes we think we are special because we go to Church, pray and devote time to HIM, but in reality we are not special at all, because only the ONE who saved us holds that title.  HE is the Special ONE.  We were lost at one point, we were broken and the ONE who searched and saved us is truly SPECIAL.  Remember HE died on the Cross, not us.  Our sin was atoned for us there.

ROMANS 12: 3  “I SAY TO EVERYONE AMONG YOU NOT TO THINK OF HIMSELF MORE HIGHLY THAN HE OUGHT TO THINK, BUT TO THINK WITH SOBER JUDGEMENT.”

Others may think highly of us because we are showing outward devotion to GOD, but we are to continuously examine our hearts as to why we are where we are and why we do what we do…….here is another version of the above scripture:

“I GIVE EACH OF YOU THIS WARNING: DON’T THINK YOU ARE BETTER THAN YOU REALLY ARE.  BE HONEST IN YOUR EVALUATION OF YOURSELVES, MEASURING YOURSELVES BY THE FAITH GOD HAS GIVEN US.”

See, we really are not that special.  Don’t let your pride get the better of you in your outward devotion to the LORD.  Devote yourself to HIM with all humble heart and soul…….then your outward devotion will be genuine.  The world will see your devotion and give glory to GOD, but GOD will see your love and devotion for HIM too……. because HE found you first!

EZEKIEL 34: 16  “I WILL SEEK THE LOST, BRING BACK THE STRAYS, BANDAGE THE INJURED, AND STRENGTHEN THE WEAK……”

  1. The book of James kept going through my head as I read your post – if we have faith, it will show in our works. What God does inside of us should be leaking out all over us.
Good one again, Maxine! You always make me think and ponder and give God the glory!
