PASTURELANDS

I am currently reading through the book of 1 Chronicles in the old testament.  I came upon the section talking about Aaron’s descendants and the settlements of the Levites.  The word pasturelands was used over and over when speaking about the Levites receiving towns and pasturelands.

WE ALL LONG FOR PASTURELANDS.

Why is that?  I long to walk in a pasture with beautiful grass and long willows.  The image alone gives me great peace for some reason.  And in a sense, we all long for peace and the guiding HAND of our SHEPHERD that walks with us through every bit of our journey here on this earth.

PSALM 95: 7 “FOR HE IS OUR GOD AND WE ARE THE PEOPLE OF HIS PASTURE.”

Isn’t it a wonderful thing that the KING of the universe has chosen us to be HIS people…….people of HIS pasture?  We are the sheep of HIS hand because we need the SHEPHERD in all things of our lives.

Sheep are helpless creatures and we so often are too.  But being helpless allows us to depend upon HIS voice.

JOHN 10: 26-27  “……..BUT YOU DO NOT BELIEVE BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT AMONG MY SHEEP.  MY SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE, AND I KNOW THEM, AND THEY FOLLOW ME.”

I don’t know about you, but I desire to follow my JESUS into HIS pasturelands each day……to follow in HIS footsteps that lead me so securely when my own footsteps seem to falter.  HE seeks us and finds us…….every day.

EZEKIEL 34: 11-12  “FOR THUS SAYS THE LORD GOD: “BEHOLD I, I MYSELF WILL SEARCH FOR MY SHEEP AND WILL SEEK THEM OUT.  AS A SHEPHERD SEEKS OUT HIS FLOCK WHEN HE IS AMONG HIS SHEEP THAT HAVE BEEN SCATTERED, SO WILL I SEEK OUT MY SHEEP, AND I WILL RESCUE THEM FROM ALL PLACES WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN SCATTERED ON A DAY OF CLOUDS AND THICK DARKNESS.”

HE WILL search and HE WILL rescue.  What a wonderful comfort…….isn’t HE such a gracious GOD to seek us?  May we continually be of thanks and praise for the fact that HE found us!  And when HE finds us this is what HE does:

EZEKIEL 34: 14  “I WILL TEND THEM IN GOOD PASTURE, AND THEIR GRAZING PLACE WILL BE ON ISRAEL’S LOFTY MOUNTAIN.  THERE THEY WILL LIE DOWN IN A GOOD GRAZING PLACE; THEY WILL FEED IN RICH PASTURE……”

Our great SHEPHERD tends to us and places us just where HE sees fit.  And if we follow HIM, our true “grazing places” in life become a reality……a perfect fit.  Seek HIS pasture with all your heart and soul and know HE already has you in HIS hands.  Rest there and take great comfort there, whether you are in trial or blessing.  We are HIS flock and we tend to be wild and woolly don’t we?  But GOD knows that and we just need to listen and follow HIS voice……

JOHN 10: 14  “I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD.  I KNOW MY OWN AND MY OWN KNOW ME.”

I love the ESV version listed above and some translations do say “I know my sheep.”  But either translation has the good news that HE owns us and we are truly HIS.  Seek today HIS pasturelands for you.  HE has already found you by HIS gracious and merciful HAND……follow, listen, graze and learn and rest my friends.  You are found by HIM!

EZEKIEL 34: 15-16  “THIS IS THE DECLARATION OF THE LORD GOD.  I WILL SEEK THE LOST, BRING BACK THE STRAYS, BANDAGE THE INJURED, AND STRENGTHEN THE WEAK, BUT I WILL DESTROY THE FAT AND THE STRONG.  I WILL SHEPHERD THEM WITH JUSTICE.”

  1. I love all these pictures / verses, bringing us the comfort God promises: even through our trials, even through our disobedience, even through this sinful world; God loves us and cares for us, and He always will.
I think of the verses where Jesus points out that He is the true vine, and we are the branches, and without Him we can do nothing. Like an electrical appliance being unplugged from its source of energy, we are good for nothing without Jesus.
