OUT OF CONTROL EMOTIONS

Do you let your emotions overwhelm you or do you keep them in check?  We all have our moments and recently I was reminded of this GODLY wisdom…….

DON’T LET YOUR EMOTIONS OVERWHELM GOD’S TRUTH FOR YOU!

So let’s ponder this for a bit and see how this applies to the current season we all are in.   Negativity, hardship and especially anger seems to be swirling all around us and the intensity of it seems to be increasing.  What our eyes see and what our ears hear will influence what we are feeling.  Words matter so much, so what we read has a great influence upon us.  Other people’s responses don’t help either, especially if they don’t earn the honor to speak into our lives.  It doesn’t take much these days to send people completely out of control!

LET GOD POUR INTO YOU AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!

Where are we in all of this?  Are we controlling the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts?  Is what we say, think and do, pleasing to the Father?  Are we spending more time with HIM and not less?

Let’s return to GOD’S word for us and remind ourselves that GOD’S word alone commands us to keep our feelings in check.  It is part of a general self-control that we should have, but many of us let our emotions run away and when that happens, we fall prey to the enemy.  Recently I found myself yelling at the television!  The enemy will and can pull us into all the chaos around us.  Let’s be very aware of our responses to any given situation.

EPHESIANS 4: 26  “IN YOUR ANGER DO NOT SIN.”  DO NOT LET THE SUN GO DOWN WHILE YOU ARE STILL ANGRY.”

Is this one a hard one for you?  How about this one?

ISAIAH 55: 12  “FOR YOU SHALL GO OUT IN JOY AND BE LED FORTH IN PEACE.”

And then there is this……..

2 TIMOTHY 1: 7  “…….FOR GOD GAVE US A SPIRIT, NOT OF FEAR, BUT OF POWER AND LOVE AND SELF-CONTROL.”

Lately…….why are we living in a war zone of words?  The above scripture says we have the Spirit’s power alone to be HIS salt and light. What happened to listening and choosing grace and kindness?

We are to choose peace over strife.  The world chooses self-gratification over anything these days.  But GOD’S word says something very different.

MATTHEW 5: 9  “BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS FOR THEY WILL BE CALLED SONS OF GOD.”

GOD’S WORD IS COUNTER TO CULTURE.  IT WAS BACK THEN IN JESUS TIME AND STILL IS TODAY.  IN ANY GIVEN SITUATION, HIS WORD REMINDS US THAT OUR FEELINGS ARE NOT TO BE TRUSTED AND WE ARE TO RESPOND AS JESUS DID.  WE ARE TO BE IMITATORS TODAY OF JESUS.

Feeling angry?  Respond in love.

Feeling sad?  Turn your eyes away and reach for HIS comforting HAND.

Experiencing grief?  Only GOD will heal your one broken heart.

Feeling frustration?  GOD’S plan will work out for you.

Dear ones, our story isn’t over until it is over and who do you trust for your story to end well?  Above all, let us reach for our Bibles more than we reach for our social media…….HIS word can be trusted and people have been doing just that for centuries.

1 PETER 4: 8  “ABOVE ALL, LOVE ONE ANOTHER DEEPLY BECAUSE LOVE COVERS OVER A MULTITUDE OF SINS.”

WHAT IS AT THE HEART OF ALL OF WHAT WE THINK WE FEEL……IS LOVE AND GOD!

The culture around us and the ungodly stir up strife, but GOD commands us to respond in all things in grace and love.

So next time your emotions get hijacked, just remember this:  only HIS loving righteousness saves us from ourselves and all our feelings.  Our self-control is not anything that we, as humans have the capacity to do.  Only with the Spirit’s help are we able to muster the control we need to daily deal with run away emotions.

GOD’S word is true and dependable and so is the Spirit of the LORD.  Lay those out of control feelings at the foot of the Cross today.  Chose control over conflict and be comforted in knowing you are loved, protected and provided for in JESUS CHRIST’S name!

PROVERBS 25: 26  “A RIGHTEOUS PERSON WHO YIELDS TO THE WICKED IS LIKE A MUDDIED SPRING OR A POLLUTED WELL.”

PROVERBS 25: 28  “A PERSON WHO DOES NOT CONTROL HIS TEMPER IS LIKE A CITY WHOSE WALL IS BROKEN DOWN.”

  1. So very true, Maxine, and what good timing your post is!
I think of the media influences in our culture, and how divisive it is, whether television, talk radio, or social media.
Proverbs 6.16-19 16These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Our culture has feet that be swift in running to mischief, and we are too ready to sow discord. 😕
You correctly offer the remedy: Above all, let us reach for our Bibles more than we reach for our social media.

  3. It’s been a lifelong goal to be angry and sin not. Anger is the sin that so easily besets me. It was the normal growing up because of the angry personality of my Dad who was an alcoholic. Our household seen daily fits of anger so I am aware of my weakness to fall pray to it and response wrongly to things that make me angry. This is a good post and a helpful one, thank you.

    1. Oh I understand this……my husband grew up with an alcoholic father. But he decided to never drink because of it. Children learn what they live don’t they? I see anger in him very rarely. Thank GOD for that. Anger gets us all……keep our eyes on CHRIST always is a big help in any given situation……it’s the old saying: WWJD???

  4. Maxine, this is good! Yes, when we read the news or get on social media, it is a mess. It is a disaster. It is crazy! Some days it is downright ridiculous and beyond reasonable at all. Hard to make sense of it all. Fear mongering galore! They want us afraid of everything and everyone. As Christians, we are not to fear what they fear. We are to put our trust in the Lord. We need much time in God’s word and in prayer seeking his counsel in all of this, and then we need to rest in him and trust him that he knows what he is doing.
