A SLOW AND STEADY REVERENCE

Our connection with the LORD can bring from us a number of responses…….and I have asked myself, am I only going to the LORD when I want something from HIM?  What about my worship and my wonder and awe of HIM?

My word choice for 2019: adore, has me thinking about what it means to adore the GOD of the universe.  Adore is a verb and it means to love and respect, to be devoted to, to cherish, treasure, to worship, revere, extol and glorify.

Adore is a word that seems to have holiness packed right into it, because……. aren’t we created to worship our HOLY GOD?

GOD CREATED US FOR WORSHIP AND HE SET US APART.

Leviticus 11:44 “………BECAUSE I, THE LORD, AM YOUR GOD.  SET YOURSELVES APART AND BE HOLY, BECAUSE I AM HOLY.”

Now the word adore itself does not occur in scripture, but that certainly doesn’t mean that it’s implication is not there.  An additional dictionary meaning for the word adore is this: to love in the highest degree.”

OH, COME LET US ADORE HIM!

Isn’t our religion vain and empty if we do not adore the ONE who created us?  And so I hope this year, the LORD will teach me a slow and steady reverence for HIM!  And like learning anything else, this will take time and a full and deep understanding of what adoration is all about.

The Christmas story is one example of what it means to adore………when the Magi came and “entering the house, they saw the child with Mary, HIS mother, and falling to their knees, they worshiped HIM.”  MATTHEW 2: 11

Where did they adore HIM? On their knees!  They fell in HIS presence…….I will admit, I don’t go to my knees enough! But at the same time, I can adore GOD wherever my feet take me!!

Charles Spurgeon said in a sermon in 1872 that……

“you may now perform those exercises of faith, those delightful acts of adoring love, which shall bring to HIM great glory.”

Spurgeon goes on to say that “the most spiritual and sanctified minds when they fully perceive the majesty and holiness of GOD, are so greatly conscious of the great disproportion between themselves and the LORD, that they are humbled and filled with holy awe.”

EPHESIANS 1: 4 “FOR HE CHOSE US IN HIM BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, TO BE HOLY AND BLAMELESS IN LOVE BEFORE HIM.”

Let us be humble and always come before HIM in awe of HIM, in real awareness of who HE is. Our adoration of HIM with worship and song and words and posture………bring HIM glory.

We are HIS adopted sons and daughters even though we are sinners, HE still loves us and draws us near to HIM.  Let us begin here and now to adore GOD for not leaving us in our sin!

ISAIAH 54:10 “FOR THE MOUNTAIN MAY DEPART AND THE HILLS BE REMOVED, BUT MY STEADFAST LOVE SHALL NOT DEPART FROM YOU, AND MY COVENANT OF PEACE SHALL NOT BE REMOVED SAYS THE LORD, WHO HAS COMPASSION ON YOU.”

I want to begin today, to adore GOD who has never left me because HE has compassion for me! And I am so thankful for HIS patient compassion towards me.  How about you?  Have you come to adore HIM today?  How about we just leave the laundry list of asking HIM for what we want aside, and just in thankfulness, adore HIM who is the great “I AM”!  GOD has amazing steadfast love for us along with compassion to grow us, steady us in trials, and give us peace along the way.  Heaven and earth adore HIM each and every day……….shouldn’t we be doing this too?  So today…….let’s not forget the powerful and the great GOD that HE is!

ISAIAH 55:6 “SEEK THE LORD WHILE HE MAY BE FOUND; CALL UPON HIM WHILE HE IS NEAR.”

  1. When I think of “adore,” I picture a dog who is well-cared-for looking at his master. That dog has adoration in his eyes. He loves his master, looks to him for any and all direction, believes his master to be true and good and wonderful. We can learn a lot from God’s creation, and I think I can learn a lot about adoring my Heavenly Father by watching a good dog. 😊

  2. This is so on point and I related strongly to the first picture. I follow a bible plan on my phone so I’m most times tempted to look at other things before I begin, but by God’s grace, I am about to find another way to follow my plan while my phone lies somewhere I cannot find it. This is how I want to adore God this year. Thanks for sharing, Maxine.
