LIVING IN THE MARGINS

I love to have in a book, Bible or Bible study, an ample margin.  I enjoy it because I make notes or draw small pictures.  I like to highlight too.  Most of my books look like they have had a once over!  Sometimes when I lend them, I feel I have to apologize for my writings there.

Margins are blank spaces……..empty spaces.  don’t know what it is about me, but I feel the need to fill them.  Do you?

If you think about it, our lives have margins too.  There are those times and spaces that are just empty, and we always seem to find a way to fill them.  Or another way to think about this, is that there are those margins in our lives where we push GOD to…….further away, keeping HIM at bay, because it seems safer to do.

How and where and why do we do this?  Why do we push HIM away when more than anything in our lives, we need HIM close?

Abiding close to GOD allows us to live in the center of HIS will, rather than HIM waiting for us in those margins!  We need to make an intentional effort to check and see if we are in the center of HIS will or are we plugging along according to our own will?  I can say at this point where I am in my faith walk that with all my heart I don’t want to get ahead of GOD, nor do I want to push HIM out or away from my current life decisions and situations.  I would rather have HIM with me, than far from me.

PSALM 119: 37 “TURN MY EYES FROM LOOKING AT WHAT IS WORTHLESS; GIVE ME LIFE IN YOUR WAYS.”

When dealing in life lessons with GOD, how often do we push HIM away because our attitude is this:  “LORD that is too hard, so I will think about that later and oh by the way, will check in when I can.”

I don’t think any of us like pain or correction, but if GOD is pushed to the margins, then maybe we won’t have to deal in those consequences HE sends our way.

But we are like stubborn children sometimes and we make it hard for GOD to speak to us.  When we push GOD to the margins, we do so with spiritual indifference.  Wouldn’t it be better to invite HIM to speak daily to our hearts?

If we are mature in our walk, then we will be obedient and able to be turned or counseled through GOD’S word.

When HE is close, we can be moved by merely a nudge or whisper. But none of this can happen when GOD is pushed to the margin.  The closer HE is to us, the more receptive we are to HIS instructions and promises.

PSALM 119: 59 “I THOUGHT ABOUT MY WAYS AND TURNED MY STEPS BACK TO YOUR DECREES.”

So let us be very careful of pushing GOD away…….it never works!  When we do, our hearts harden and our minds become clouded with the things of the world.

If we are purposeful, GOD can also help us with those margins in our lives where HE will fill them with all that HE is and more!  And HIS more, will spill over into the rest of our lives.  Don’t just push HIM away, let HIM in!

Since we tend to keep people in those margins and I think we all are pretty good at this, why wouldn’t we do the same with GOD?  Makes sense to me because we are so human…….but GOD made HIS grand design to have a relationship with us.  HE doesn’t want to be pushed away and HE will pursue us in a gentle and loving way.

Not allowing GOD into ever corner of our lives, puts HIM in a place where HE cannot touch us and HE is unable to truly manifest HIMSELF in all aspects of our lives.

Maybe right now you know someone who has pushed GOD to the margins of their life.  We are required by GOD to come alongside them with all empathy and grace and to do our best to remind them of who GOD is.

Our Savior shows us daily compassion if we ourselves are living and abiding with HIM in the margins or not.  We can only push HIM away so much and only so far and yet HE will never leave us!  GOD is so good that way.  Let HIM draw close friends…….HE is faithful today and always.

PSALM 119: 49-50 “REMEMBER YOUR WORD TO YOUR SERVANT, IN WHICH YOU HAVE MADE ME HOPE.  THIS IS MY COMFORT IN MY AFFLICTION, THAT YOUR PROMISE GIVES ME LIFE.”

    1. Kathy….I can say oh how I love it too. There is so much meat there in that Psalm. And I love it all the more because it is long and I can stay in it a while! Thanks for your comment and blessings on your day.

  1. “We need to make an intentional effort to check and see if we are in the center of HIS will or are we plugging along according to our own will?” This is the key, Maxine. Too many Christians sit back and just let their relationships with life “happen.” What people don’t realize is the effort we need to make in order to have the fullest relationship possible with the Lord. Excellent post!
