Those of you who know me well know that my favorite shape is the shape of a heart.  I have various heart shaped wooden cutouts around my house.  They are a reminder to me, that my daily heart condition is a critical piece of my faith.

JESUS said in Matthew 5:8: “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see GOD.”

Our heart condition is truly the seat of our soul…….everything flows from it.  And by everything, I mean thoughts, words, actions, worship, praise.  Our character and our integrity is a reflection of our heart condition.

In JESUS’ day, many people believed that they would get to heaven by what they did in their religious practices, however JESUS taught that your heart condition was key.

LUKE 16:15 “AND HE SAID TO THEM, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but GOD knows your hearts.  For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of GOD.”

What matters to GOD is the matter of our hearts!  For this reason alone, we need to examine our heart daily.

When I find myself in short supply of patience either with others or even with myself, I need to look inward and see what is hiding in my heart.  Purity of heart happens when we ask GOD to root out what doesn’t belong there.

A verse that I hold closely is this: Philippians 4:8 which says……

“Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

Since our minds and hearts are so closely connected, don’t we want to remain steadfast in thinking on the above mentioned?

My father was a walking testament to the above scripture.  When I was a little girl, he always managed to point out to me what was true, lovely, beautiful and excellent.  He gave those things praise with the glory going to GOD.  When someone continually points out the true, the pure and lovely…….you start to notice and look for those things…….and you desire them as well.  Now today, I find myself doing just that…….thinking on those things rather than the negative that our world hands to us daily.  I choose to look for the lovely…….and because of JESUS, I often find it.  I choose to fill my heart with the good, the right and the just, and notice I just said I choose.

People can claim to be religious, but still have impure hearts.  Do you choose to hold on to the negative?  So right now, what is hiding in yours heart?  We all tend to keep something hidden, but GOD knows exactly what is there.  Let HIM help you to examine it, then ask for forgiveness and for HIM to remove whatever doesn’t belong there.

Once I figured out that I couldn’t hide from HIM, then I learned to ask HIM to expose the negative in my heart, cause I don’t like it being there and I know HE doesn’t either.  And with repentance and prayer, GOD helps me with the impurity and I am always learning, always examining each day.  Purity of heart is my desire.  How about you?

Our thoughts turn into actions, so our hearts need to be pure if we are to do the will of GOD.  Purity of heart leads to pure motives and thoughts which leads to Holy Living.

Purity of heart produces purity of speech.  What you say and how you say it is an example of the Christ follower that you are.  People around us will notice more than we realize, especially if you claim to be Christian.  The world is watching us!

Purity of heart produces a kind and gentle attitude towards others.  Ever think to yourself, wow, that person needs an attitude adjustment?  Sometimes I think that of myself as well!  If we need an attitude adjustment then chances are, we have sin in our hearts.

But most of all, let us be well aware that we cannot create purity in our hearts on our own……only the Holy Spirit can help us with this.

When we submit to the LORD, by HIS word, HE will work in us new hearts, hearts of gladness and joy and steadfast hearts of peace and grace.  Let purity of heart be your daily goal…….and remember as the Proverb tells us:

PROVERBS 4:23: “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”
