IDENTIFY THE COUNTERFEIT

Many years ago I worked in a bank as a teller.  The very first thing we learned was how to spot a counterfeit bill or check.  I felt pretty confident in the spotting of a bill, but the checks were worrisome.  Whenever I wasn’t sure, I went to my manager and asked her to look too.  A seasoned second pair of eyes always helped make the decision.

If you walk through a Christian bookstore today, you will realize there are many many books to choose from.  But do you, and can you recognize when one isn’t real truth?  My mentor who I treasure once said to me: “just because a book says JESUS on the front, doesn’t mean it is rooted in solid truth”.

With the world seeping into our Churches, we have to be careful that what we read besides the Bible, is truthful.  I have learned to search out the author and see if there is anything that is questionable.  Do you do this investigating too?

You see, I for one, don’t want to be led down a wrong path and honestly don’t want to waste my time……believe me, I have done this and yes, I have been fooled!

We need the Holy Spirit’s discernment when it comes to these matters, because the enemy is just waiting to lead us astray……..remember, he waits and preys on our weaknesses!  He is a master of lies and desires to cheapen the truth in any way possible.  So do your research with anything that comes off the shelf, even if it is from a Christian outlet.

The one book that is not and never will be a counterfeit is the BIBLE. You can count on and never worry about what you read there.  Be careful in translations…….some like The Message deviate quite a bit from the original manuscripts.  Research your translation as well.

All this talk of counterfeits is a lesson in who we are in CHRIST.  Are you rooted in HIM?  Is HE your all and all, your priority, your Sovereign LORD?  If you are in relationship with HIM and know the word, then you will recognize a counterfeit.

JOHN 8:31 – 32 “IF YOU ABIDE IN MY WORD, YOU ARE TRULY MY DISCIPLES, AND YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUTH, AND THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.”

The counterfeit way that has filtered into our Churches is an easy-believism that makes no moral demands on the lives of sinners.  There is a danger out there of “another gospel” that has cheapened and weakened the true WORD of GOD.  Let us make sure that we do have a clear and concise understanding of the GOSPEL!  This other gospel is the difference between the blessed and the cursed, the narrow and the wide gate and the sheep and the goats.

ACTS 5:20 “GO AND STAND IN THE TEMPLE AND SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE ALL THE WORDS OF THIS LIFE.”

JESUS alone has the words of life and we know GOD through HIM.  HIS word alone is truth.  If you are not daily in the truth, how will you know the truth?

As 1 Corinthians 3:18 says:  “let no one deceive himself”.  The world will tell you how to be wise, but the BIBLE has all the holy wisdom we could ever need or know.  Use it as your filter for everything else you read.

Let us ask daily for that spiritual truth that can only come from GOD!  Let us treasure it within our hearts, sharing it with others, believers and nonbelievers alike.  My most recent journey with the LORD has shown me how important the “whole truth and nothing but the truth” is.

So search for it, learn it, memorize it, share it and be obedient to it.  Because there is nothing like the TRUTH…….it gives us life abiding with our Savior and it sets us free!

JOHN 16: 13 – 14″WHEN THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH COMES, HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL THE TRUTH, FOR HE WILL NOT SPEAK ON HIS OWN AUTHORITY, BUT WHATEVER HE HEARS HE WILL SPEAK, AND HE WILL DECLARE TO YOU THE THINGS THAT ARE TO COME.  HE WILL GLORIFY ME, FOR HE WILL TAKE WHAT IS MINE AND DECLARE IT TO YOU.”

  1. Ahhh, the Truth and nothing but the Truth….Such an important part of following Christ. Great advice about examining all things to determine (with God’s gift of wisdom and discernment) what is Truth and what is not. This is a great post and reminder to always make seeking Him in the Truth of His Word our most important thing in life. Thank you Maxine!

  2. YES LYNN!
May we always be discerning where the truth is concerned. It is sad that the soft gospel has taken hold in many of our churches. Blessings and thanks for your comment here!
