A GUARDED HEART, QUIET HEART

Since Valentine’s Day is tomorrow, it got me thinking of all the matters of the heart.

Matters of the “heart” are equated with matters of the soul, the will and the mind in scripture…….

PROVERBS 4:23 “ABOVE ALL ELSE, GUARD YOUR HEART, FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO FLOWS FROM IT.”  NIV

And the ESV version says it this way…….

“KEEP YOUR HEART WITH ALL VIGILANCE FOR FROM IT FLOW THE SPRINGS OF LIFE.”

Is your heart guarded?  When the unbelieving world presses in on you, what do you do?  In spite of the stress, rat race and overwhelming news, do you find that you have peace of heart?  Where does that peace come from?

PSALM 37:11 “BUT THE MEEK SHALL INHERIT THE LAND AND DELIGHT THEMSELVES IN ABUNDANT PEACE.”

Could having that abundant peace have everything to do with guarding our hearts?

Our GOD cares about the condition of our hearts, the seat of our souls.  And while man looks at the outward appearance, GOD looks at our hearts…….

1 SAMUEL 16:7 “…….FOR GOD SEES NOT AS MAN SEES, FOR MAN LOOKS AT THE OUTWARD APPEARANCE, BUT THE LORD LOOKS AT THE HEART.”

Guarding our hearts is an important thing for us to do, and we can accomplish this guarding in a number of different ways.

First, being in GOD’S word and filling your mind with HIS wisdom rather than the world’s wisdom is vital to dealing with life and the tough stuff we come in contact with.  The more you hide scripture in your heart and let it nourish and refresh you, the more your heart will be at peace.  The LORD wants us to have purity of the heart and filling it in this way is the only way to feel at peace in spite of the circumstances.

Second, prayer and our daily connection with JESUS leaves us knowing that we have an advocate to fight our battles, especially ones that appear to be beyond anything we can currently do in our situations.  We can pour out our hearts, HE listens, and HE answers.  Seeing prayers answered puts trust in the ONLY ONE who can provide and is always there for us, when others fail.  Confidence and peace comes from daily prayer which guards our troubled hearts and then we experience that peace that goes beyond understanding.

WHEN WE ABANDON OURSELVES TO THE CROSS AS I MENTIONED IN MY PREVIOUS POST, GOD GUARDS OUR HEARTS WITH LESS STRESS, LESS WORRY, AND MORE PEACE.

Isn’t our biggest fear having our hearts broken?  We long to love one another, have communion with one another, but yet there is this underlying fear of having our hearts broken in two.

Sometimes it feels too hard to bear the injustice in our world, but guarding your heart helps you bear all things in HIS love and protection for you…….

1 Corinthians 7-8 “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  Love never ends.”

Let us quiet our hearts and let that scripture…….sink……. in…… deep!

Loving all and living to love others can break your heart, but GOD gives each one the strength to bear up under it.  HE alone helps us guard our hearts.  GOD is our hope…….GOD is our endurance and our strength.

If you quiet your heart and listen, you will hear HIS whisper to you……..HIS personal message that is first of all pure, gentle, reasonable and last of all peaceable.  Grab onto HIS word that will sustain your heart in all ways and through all things of life.  Guard your heart friends, because all else flows from it!

PROVERBS  3: 3 “LET NOT STEADFAST LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS FORSAKE YOU; BIND THEM AROUND YOUR NECK; WRITE THEM ON THE TABLET OF YOUR HEART.”

JOHN 14:1 “LET NOT YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED. BELIEVE IN GOD; BELIEVE ALSO IN ME.”

  2. Maxine, this is such a beautiful post and message! Proverbs 4:23 is so encouraging….the importance of guarding our hearts, though which all things flow. The resulting gift from our Father is that Peace you talked about. Guarding our hearts, which begins with guarding our thoughts, is the pathway to His peace for us. Thank you sweet friend!
