Today I received a sweet gift from a friend…..
We met for coffee and not only did she come bearing gifts, but she also bought my breakfast. I didn’t plan on it, nor was it a special occasion. Sometimes the best gifts are the unexpected. Have you ever noticed that receiving one always just makes your day a little brighter? I often wonder why that is?
And that is how the LORD gives as well. HE delights in the unexpected and the surprise. HIS gifts are the best in life because the message behind them is profound and eternal…..
I walked outside yesterday evening and saw GOD’S hand in the above! It was grandeur and glory all mixed up in the sky. I stopped in my tracks to watch and I never wanted the color to end. HIS gift that evening for all to see. And I wondered, did anyone else see this gift of glory besides me?
Gifts are like that, just for you, especially for you and for me. GOD’S world and the people in your world, your family, your friends, all are a gift tailor made just for you. If you think about it, GOD gives gifts in a million infinite ways.
JESUS came, however, as the ultimate gift to save and rescue our world. The LORD gave HIS one and only SON, to hang on the Cross for our sins. Yes, JESUS chose the nails for you and for me. Since HE is GOD, HE could have chosen not to go to the Cross for us. But HE did, because HE wanted to win our hearts, just for HIM.
And if you realize that HE is the ultimate gift, you will know and understand how valuable that gift truly is. Honestly, other gifts will pale in comparison. Yes, HE died on the cross to save us through grace, love and mercy……because our gifts at the altar are small and all we seem to bring is our brokenness. But HE forgives and that is the gift! HE doesn’t look the other way but HE sees us…..
“And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that JESUS sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at HIS feet behind HIM weeping, and she began to wash HIS feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and she kissed HIS feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.”
One small gift of love, one gift of pure humility, one gift of faith. JESUS saw this woman’s heart and HE gave her the best gift of all…….forgiveness. Not only that, HE didn’t rebuke her, HE shocked those around HIM with HIS acceptance of her actions. She knew she was a sinner and needed forgiveness……..HE forgave and told her to go in peace.
WHAT A GIFT SHE HAD IN JESUS! I WONDER WHAT THIS WOMAN FELT AFTER SHE LEFT HIM? DID SHE FEEL FREE? WAS SHE SMILING? WAS HER STEP A LITTLE LIGHTER WITH THE WEIGHT OF HER SINS GONE?
All we can feel then is a heartfelt “thank you” and know that we can’t earn HIS gift. We can’t earn HIS forgiveness…….it is HIS gift of grace to us. HE chose the nails freely so we would be forgiven!!
In our lives daily, we give gifts to others, how much more then, does GOD give to us? Oh let us wonder…….oh let us count the ways!
ROMANS 5: 15 “BUT THE FREE GIFT IS NOT LIKE THE OFFENSE. FOR IF BY THE ONE MAN’S OFFENSE MANY DIED, MUCH MORE THE GRACE OF GOD AND THE GIFT BY THE GRACE OF THE ONE MAN, JESUS CHRIST, ABOUNDED TO MANY.
