IT IS HUMAN NATURE TO COMPARE………WE DO IT EVEN WHEN WE DON’T REALIZE.
In our fast paced social media world the comparisons can be endless. You will be pushed daily into comparing yourself with all those perfect pictures of others’ lives. We even have a social media website that promotes just that…….pictures.
All those perfect pictures are flawed because the person holding the camera is flawed……..all are flawed because the people in the picture are somehow broken. Yes we all are broken and we all fall short of the glory of GOD! That is why JESUS came in the first place………to rescue a broken world.
When we compare ourselves to others we fall into either envy or pride. We see ourselves either as the better one or the one with less. Instead, we need to be content with how GOD made us and where HE has us in our walk with HIM. We all are unique and should celebrate one another for who we are in CHRIST!
Can you be happy for someone when they receive an award or when they buy something new like a car or home? How about if they go on a vacation that you know in your lifetime will never happen? We are surrounded by these types of happenings and the world tells us we need more, more, more! But what we really lack is our true identity in CHRIST.
Because I was an athlete my whole life I grew up with comparisons……..it always was who was the best figure skater, who had the prettiest dress and who finished first, second or third. I’ll never forget getting 2nd place in a freestyle competition, but envying that 1st place medal! I lived with that stigma of not being the best, or not being good enough and those thoughts drove me through my skating career. But then I had my time in the limelight…….I was chosen to skate with Ice Capades and it was my time of living a dream. It was quite an experience of standing back stage after the show and having so many people wanting my autograph!
After living on the road, I decided to teach skating and over time I learned what not being the best was all about. I had students that didn’t do well in competition, and some had talent, others did not. But I developed a mantra that I told my students: you will learn more about yourself at the bottom of the podium rather than at the top. What I meant was, you will learn more about who you are, what your determination is, and how hard you will work to better your skating.
We all do this very thing in life when we learn that we all deal with stuff…….hard stuff, stuff that hurts, wonderful stuff and tragic stuff. Yes, it is the stuff of life. But we were never meant to compare ourselves with one another…….GOD made each one of us as HIS unique creation, all with gifts, all different, all loved by HIM. And isn’t that fact just wonderful in and of itself? No matter what you are going through right now at this very moment, isn’t it just amazing that the GOD of the universe was thinking of you when HE created you in the womb? YOU my friend are one of a kind and created for such a time as this. GOD has plans for you in your own little world of influence, not to compare, but to encourage……..not to compare, but to love…….not to compare, but to extend grace.
Think on this: while you are comparing yourself with someone, there is another who is comparing themselves to you!! And while you are comparing, you are missing looking at the GOD who so lovingly made you and designed you to touch your world in a very unique way.
ASK GOD RIGHT NOW TO SHOW YOU HOW UNIQUE YOU ARE………
I pray that GOD will help you to get comfortable in your own skin, in your own unique set of circumstances. Stop thinking someone else has it better……..look for your own blessings that GOD has given you. A satisfied heart is a content heart and a grateful heart. As I told my students, there will always be someone better, someone prettier, someone richer, someone taller, and it goes on and on!
JESUS is who we should really compare ourselves to: are we learning to be like HIM? HE is our true example……..let us learn from HIM, because HE came to save us, to encourage us and to guide us on our journeys. Remember, you are a child of GOD, made in HIS image, flawed but loved, a sinner, but forgiven! SO stop comparing and start living, submitting yourself to the true GOD, the only ONE who will set you free.
2 CORINTHIANS 10:12 “FOR WE DARE NOT CLASS OURSELVES OR COMPARE OURSELVES WITH THOSE WHO COMMEND THEMSELVES. BUT THEY, MEASURING THEMSELVES BY THEMSELVES, AND COMPARING THEMSELVES AMONG THEMSELVES, ARE NOT WISE.”
